Ette stood on the bleak walls of Edinburgh castle, fists clenched, her cheeks wet with tears. These were tears of frustration and anger. That morning she had waited with her father as he left for boarding the boat, but the farewell had deteriorated into a furious argument. No matter how she begged, pleaded and demanded to go with him, he was implacable. He stood, arms folded, a slight smile on his lips as he listened yet again to her arguments.

‘How can you possibly leave me here in this dreadful place?’ she demanded, indicating the dark, brooding outline of Edinburgh Castle. ‘Do you not love me anymore, Father?’ she cried in an exasperated voice.

Gervais de la Ferte took hold of her shoulders. ‘Minette, of course, I love you; I have arranged a match for you into one of the royal families of Europe. One of your sons may become the next King of Scotland. You can help Queen Margaret and the Vatican by having a great deal of influence in this country. You are here to cement our alliance with Scotland; you are an important player in this game. I thought you understood that.’

She nodded miserably. ‘But Father, you don’t understand, I love someone else,’ she whispered. He pulled his daughter into his arms and held her.

‘You have a childish crush on a famous Horse Warrior. Do you think it was not noticed?’ he said, holding her at arm’s length. ‘In a few months, you will travel to London; I may well come over from France for the wedding if I can. Now hold your head high, wipe away the tears and remember who you are. Minette de la Ferte, the daughter of the Seneschal of France.’ Without another word, he had turned and run up the gangplank, jumping onto the deck as they began to cast off.

Now she was back in the castle on her own, her father gone, her brother Étienne with the forces of Robert Curthose who were on their way to attack them here. She thought back on her conversation in the chapel with Donald Bane. She had dismissed his ideas as fancy and dangerous because she expected to talk her father round. Donald had expected her to consent to ride out of the castle and into the lowlands with him, in other words, to running away. Now she knew that she had no alternative; she would go with Donald Bane and find her brother Étienne. He would understand. More importantly, she would run to Morvan De Malvais.
